A Plymouth Pickleball Club Origin Story.
It was the Summer of 2022 when Calvin Bushor and Paul Price, the founders of Plymouth Pickleball, discovered the fastest-growing sport in the world. Upon this new discovery, the two brothers-in-law searched high and low for a place to play in their hometown of Plymouth, Michigan. This search led them to many dead-ends and nowhere to play this newly-found game. There were courts nearby in Canton, Ann Arbor, Livonia, and Northville, but they were either locked away in private clubs, required a complex registration process, or were just too far of a distance to travel. They wanted somewhere local to Plymouth to play pickleball!
Calvin had an idea and he picked up the phone, and called PARC, the local Plymouth Arts and Recreation Community Center, and asked if Pickleball was available. He learned that PARC used to coordinate a pickleball league prior to strategic business decisions influenced by COVID, and the impact it had on local companies. PARC decided to decommission their program and there hasn’t been one since, but they were open to hosting a program if someone were interested in running it. Inside the PARC gymnasium, there still remain four taped courts, and they have portable nets that can be used by patrons.
We’re bringing pickleball to the Plymouth community!
We saw an opportunity to bring pickleball to Plymouth and have created this platform, PlymouthPickleball.com, to begin that journey. We’re starting this journey at PARC where we will host a variety of pickleball sessions from open play, introduction to Pickleball, and more.
How can you join Plymouth Pickleball and start to play with us and the community?
It’s simple, start by subscribing to PlymouthPickleball.com so that you are informed of upcoming sessions. We’re starting by getting a list of interested players who want to learn the game of pickleball and start playing more regularly. Once we learn more about who’s interested, we will begin organizing events at PARC.
The Plymouth Pickleball Roadmap:
We are on step 1!
- Learn who’s interested playing pickleball in Plymouth. We created a facebook group, instagram, and this website to help us find players. We want to learn how many people want to play, their skill level, and what time works best, and gather as much information as we can so we can move on to step two in an informed way. (Updated: ✅)
- Host our first open-play event at PARC. Once we learn who’s interested, we want to host our first open-play session at our local community center, PARC. (Updated: ✅)
- Host regular open-play sessions at PARC. The next step is to build momentum and play on a regular basis. This may require more time and energy from the community so learning who may want to help by getting involved will be key. (In Progress)
- Host our first coaching lesson teaching intro to Pickleball at PARC. To get more people playing Pickleball, we need to focus some energy on teaching the game.
- Milestone one was achieved! We have big aspirations beyond these first four goals that include getting better infrastructure and courts to play in Plymouth, forming an official Pickleball club with a dedicated space with modern courts, and more. If you’re interested in learning about our vision or have ways to help, let us know!
